[Bug 241914] Re: Desktop expands beyond border right and bottom

2008-12-18 Thread Bryce Harrington

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the
original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to
reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against
the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we
may be able to pass upstream for help.

[Bug 241914] Re: Desktop expands beyond border right and bottom

2008-10-17 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi sp1471,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from
cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

  Ubuntu 7.10
I am not sure which package is responsible for this. I'm sorry.

What happens is this: The Ubuntu menu bar sometimes, say after using
Ubuntu for a few hours or a few days, extends beyond the border of the
screen. So, the bar acts as if the screen is not say 1024x768, but as
- something bigger. The same happens when I watch a video stream from the
- internet (using the current version of Firefox) in full screen. It does
- not happen to like maximized firefox or openoffice.
+ something bigger. The same happens when I watch a flash-video stream
+ from the internet (using the current version of Firefox with flash) in
+ full screen. It does not happen to like maximized firefox or openoffice.

The only way I am able to see the right side of the bar again, is by
clearing the 'Expand' option of the gnome-panel properties, until so
many applications are started that it moves beyond the border again.

A few months ago, it seemed to happen daily. Now it happened again after
say a few weeks. It happened right after I put in a DVD-movie. Totem
started, but I had already VLC running, so I closed Totem. I remember
that in the past very often Totem (or Xine) was started/closed before
this happened. Could it be that Totem destroys some system settings? But
then it is still a kind of bug of the software that controls the screen
size, since that software should not allow for it, or at least give me
the oppertunity to correct it. BTW: Totem does not run as root, hence
should not be able to alter resolution. It was possible to watch the
video full screen just fine with VLC. That is the strange thing: the
problem does not seem to apply to all situations, although it is not
just the gnome-panel that is affected.

What should happen of course, is that the menu bar and the full screen
firefox stays with in the 1024x768 range.
