I don't have desktop effects enabled but I still have kdenlive crashing. It worked once after I didn't try for a few weeks but all subsequent tries involved it crashing. Same problem here in Hardy (also, upon installing, it does not insert anything into the menus). One workaround I found in some forums is to open it by running the following command: 'kdenlive -nograb' (worked for me). Sorry, this is on Ubuntu 8.04 running GNOME with all updates released as of today, on an Intel-based notebook (i945 chipset/graphics).
