The problem had been resolved on that machine as noted above by rerunning the upgrader. I was able to reproduce the issue on a (nearly) identical installation. The error is caused by cupsys failing, 2008-06-28 22:17:41,001 ERROR got an error from dpkg for pkg: '/var/cache/apt/archives/cupsys_1.3.2-1ubuntu7.7_i386.deb': 'subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 ' 2008-06-28 22:18:02,098 ERROR SystemError from cache.commit(): E:Sub-process /tmp/tmpD9umBy/backports/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) Could you please run: $ sudo dpkg --configure -a $ sudo apt-get install -f and attach the output of those commands to this bugreport? Rerunning do-release-upgrade ran successfully, the machine was upgraded to Gutsy.
