[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes

2008-10-01 Thread Kevin Hunter
Sorry, I should have gotten back to this sooner.

My point with this bug report was not that I had my settings set
properly for the exact setup (I do, but I have to remember to start
pulseaudio, currently), but that Rhythmbox dies. A program should /not/
just die; Rhythmbox should *gracefully* handle the error and not just
crash.

Juxtapose this behavior with, say, Amarok. Amarok deals with no sound-
server much more gracefully.

I'll give you that it could be an ALSA configuration issue, but if so,
it's a parallel issue.

This may be related as well: if I'm using Rhythmbox and switch to a tty
(e.g. Ctrl+Alt+F1), the connection gets broken (or something) and
Rhythmbox dies. Again, juxtapose this behavior with Amarok: it doesn't
die, and continues to play sound normally.

Suggest not closing this bug, or otherwise help me better articulate
where to find the bug *in Rhythmbox*.

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes

2008-10-01 Thread Kevin Hunter
For the record:

aplay *successfully* plays wav files when pulseaudio is running (as
expected)

aplay does *not* work when pulseaudio is stopped (as expected) (***
PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused)

Again: the issue is whether Rhythmbox gracefully handles an unexpected
condition, not whether my settings are correct.

Thanks for the update Kevin, I'll set the status back to New. You may
want to edit the original description to more explicitly reflect the
broken behavior and what you expect it to be, although it doesn't do a
bad job now.

The bug is not a rhythmbox one, similar upstream issues are described on
http://pulseaudio.org/ticket/188 and
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=537539. Reassigning the bug to
gst-plugins-good since the bugzilla bug seems to indicate the issue is
due this one

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes

2008-10-01 Thread Kevin Hunter
** Description changed:

+ Problem (added after discussion):
+
+ Rhythmbox freezes when no sound-server is available. This is *not*
+ correct behavior. Though there may be another configuration issue as
+ well, Rhythmbox freezing is the issue. It should not freeze, and should
+ gracefully handle unexpected conditions. To enable healthy competition,
+ I'll note that Amarok handles this unexpected condition just fine.
+
  Short version:

If there is no sound server started, and I attempt to play a song,
Rhythmbox freezes. Starting the sound server manually afterward does
not help, and I have to force-quit Rhythmbox and reopen.

  System info:

  $ lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID: Ubuntu
  Description: Ubuntu 8.04.1
  Release: 8.04
  Codename: hardy

  $ uname -a
  Linux hani 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:15:37 UTC 2008 x86_64
GNU/Linux

  Long version:

PulseAudio rocks, and I prefer it when applications play nicely. I
therefore don't use ESD (who needs system sounds, since that what seems
to start the ESD server automatically on startup?) However I do have
some applications still that want direct access to certain devices
(notably Twinkle), so I need to manually start and stop PulseAudio. But
I forget to hit Alt+F2 and run it sometimes when I boot the machine, and
then Rhythmbox just freezes when I try to play media files.

Shouldn't the behavior be Whoops! Unable to find a sound server. Do
you need to give your sound-server a nudge or set your Ubuntu
preferences properly? (or something user-friendly message) instead of
  just freezing?

I also suspect it *may* be a timeout issue, but I've never waited long
enough to test for that since I want to listen when I want to listen!
  ;-)

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes

2008-10-01 Thread Kevin Hunter
@ Mike, I've updated the description. Even included a healthy
competition charge. :-) Does that work?

@Sebastien, hmm, okay. From an end-user point of view, all I know is
that Rhythmbox freezes. Good call in deducing *where* the problem is,
as I mentioned this on the Rhythmbox mailing lists or discussion room
(don't remember anymore) and their general reaction was it ain't our
fault, but didn't help pinpoint where it might be. Thanks.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please try to obtain a backtrace following the
instructions at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload
the backtrace (as an attachment) to the bug report. This will greatly
help us in tracking down your problem.

what did you select in the system menu, preferences, sounds, music and
video option?

[Bug 244324] Re: no sound-server available, rhythmbox freezes

2008-08-01 Thread Kevin Hunter
what did you select in the system menu,
preferences, sounds, music and video option?

They're all set to ALSA. Not PulseAudio. Setting to PulseAudio will
likely solve my immediate issue but is *not* the point of the bug
report. The point is that Rhythmbox should not crash if no sound server
is available. It should gracefully handle the unexpected condition.

As for the DebuggingProgramCrash, I get this:

$ sudo apt-get install rhythmbox-dbgsym=0.11.5-0ubuntu8
 ...
WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated!
  rhythmbox-dbgsym
 ...

I'm not willing to install software that can't be authenticated, and the
instructions on the provided link do not give me a key to add. I will
note that I can reproduce this every time. I just turn off or kill any
and all sound daemons, then start Rhythmbox and try to play something.

I can give you Rhythmbox's debug output, as obtained by

$ rhythmbox -d  rhythmbox.dbg 21
...

I'm snipped most of the unimportant precursor stuffs up to the point I
switched to the window and tried to play a song.

the log has *** PULSEAUDIO: Unable to connect: Connection refused
which means something is trying to use pulseaudio, you set the sound
preferences to use also so that should not be gstreamer that rhythmbox
is using, does aplay on a wav works correctly? could be an alsa
configuration issue
