I've written a patch (attached) to gvfs that enables permissions to be read - which I've been using for a week or so. I have also written code for the set operation but it needs a little bit more work to tidy up, which I'm prepared to do if it's going to be adopted by Ubuntu. I have submitted the patch to Gnome bugzilla but there seems to be no interest. Is this a dead end? Its definitely an issue in gvfs. As a part of my job involves heavy backend development on web systems, which are usually accessible via FTP, this would be a feature I would really like to see enter Nautilus. I would be willing to look into writing a patch for this, but need to know more information on where this problem lies. Is anyone aware of whether this is a nautilus bug or an issue with lack of support in gvfsd-ftp? If this is merely a lack of Nautilus support it is likely to be significantly easier to implement than writing full support for this feature into gvfs as well.
