[Bug 247682] Re: beta flash/ firefox crash

2008-07-11 Thread Conn
I am currently running Intrepid (also using Flash v10 beta 2) and I can
confirm this behaviour, using Firefox 3. Another site that crashes 100%
reproducibly: http://polidics.com/

Tested on two computers, a) Dell Inspiron 510m - Pentium M, Intel 855GM;
b) Dell Dimension 1100 - Intel Celeron, NVIDIA 5200 PCI.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Visit http://polidics.com

Results:
1. Firefox immediately crashes with a segmentation fault (no debug messages).

Tested the following scenarios:
1. With compiz & without any compositing managers - no difference
2. With & without libflashsupport (see bug #192888) - no difference
3. With & without pulse_pcm configuration (see bug #198453) - no difference
4. With & without "hardware acceleration" enabled within Flash preferences - no
difference

The previous version of Flash v10 (beta 1) worked reliably, without crashes on
these sites, under two conditions:
1) when using the pulse_pcm ALSA plugins without libflashsupport
2) without pulse_pcm configuration set or libflashsupport (bypasses PulseAudio
and only works when PulseAudio server is suspended)

Conclusion:
a) This bug is a regression that occurred between beta 1 and beta 2 of Flash
v10.
b) These crashes are *not* related to PulseAudio, so please do not mark as a
duplicate of #192888.

[Bug 247682] Re: beta flash/ firefox crash

2008-07-11 Thread Conn
I'm anticipating that 64bit users will not notice crashes on these sites
- presumably because of nspluginwrapper. Following from my earlier
proposal to use nspluginwrapper on 32bit Ubuntu (to fix PulseAudio &
libflashsupport problems, see bug #192888), I have created a thread on
the Ubuntu Forums with instructions to test the i386 nspluginwrapper
package here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=856764

My rationale for using nspluginwrapper is simple: if Adobe Flash itself
has a bug, we cannot fix the bug directly, as it is a closed source
product. If we can mitigate or stop crashes using nspluginwrapper,
however, then it should be considered for use on all architectures. From
my testing of nspluginwrapper i386 on affected sites, these crashes have
completely stopped and Flash content appears to work correctly.

[Bug 247682] Re: beta flash/ firefox crash

2008-07-12 Thread Conn
Ok, for my regular profile I only use Adblock Plus. I have done further
testing and discovered:

Using a fresh profile in every case:
1. Firefox 3 (Ubuntu version) exhibits this bug
2. Firefox 3 (upstream version) exhibits this bug
3. Firefox 2 (Ubuntu version) does *not* exhibit this bug.
4. Firefox 2 (upstream version) does *not* exhibit this bug.

Therefore it seems there is some kind of conflict between Firefox 3 and
Flash 10.0.0.525 (and it's not the fault of Ubuntu's patches, as the
upstream build is the same).

Some users have reported that htttp://polidics.com site triggers this
crash, but others have not. It crashes 100% reproducibly on both my
systems (intel and nvidia driver), though sometimes the crash is
triggered only when you begin scrolling the page. With nspluginwrapper,
the crashes stop completely, and Flash appears to work without issue.

It would help if every user that reports on this bug ensure they let us
know their version of Ubuntu (32bit vs 64bit) and in the case of 32bit
whether they are using nspluginwrapper or not.

[Bug 247682] Re: beta flash/ firefox crash

2008-07-11 Thread Conn
I am currently running Intrepid (also using Flash v10 beta 2) and I can
confirm this behaviour, using Firefox 3. Another site that crashes 100%
reproducibly: http://polidics.com/

Tested on two computers, a) Dell Inspiron 510m - Pentium M, Intel 855GM;
b) Dell Dimension 1100 - Intel Celeron, NVIDIA 5200 PCI.

Following from my earlier
proposal to use nspluginwrapper on 32bit Ubuntu (to fix PulseAudio &
libflashsupport problems, see bug #192888), I have created a thread on
the Ubuntu Forums with instructions to test the i386 nspluginwrapper
package here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=856764

2008-07-11 Thread Conn
I am currently running Intrepid (also using Flash v10 beta 2) and I can
confirm this behaviour, using Firefox 3. Another site that crashes 100%
reproducibly: http://polidics.com/

Tested on two computers, a) Dell Inspiron 510m - Pentium M, Intel 855GM;
b) Dell Dimension 1100 - Intel Celeron, NVIDIA 5200 PCI.

Following from my earlier
proposal to use nspluginwrapper on 32bit Ubuntu (to fix PulseAudio &
libflashsupport problems, see bug #192888), I have created a thread on
the Ubuntu Forums with instructions to test the i386 nspluginwrapper
package here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=856764

Never mind i see wher eit says from Hardy. but Scott pushed a new
flash to downgrade as flash+64 bit seem to have most issues due to
libflashsupport. Also most sites may not have support for flash 10 yet.
