Based on your comment, I experimented a bit more, and the problem does seem related to pulseaudio somehow. Shutting down pulseaudio and playing a sound with aplay works. I have had some problems of my own using Intrepid with snd-hda-intel. I uninstalled pulseaudio and now have full functionality. Using the mixer, I can unmute the internal microphone, and hear that passed through OK, so the hardware is working as well.
