Colin: with 1.7MB you mean the space on the installation CD that aptitude uses up? Which packages did you include in that calculation? >From my experience, aptitude pulls in stuff like its doc package (which IMHO should only be Suggested, not Recommended); and while libparse- debianchangelog-perl is really useful for aptitude, that package Recommends several other (large) packages which I didn't find necessary so far. If you want to save space, maybe these other packages could be removed first? Personally, I'd appreciate to have aptitude kept in Ubuntu default installation in the future. FWIW, since Bruce said he thought it couldn't take up all that much space, I make the space occupied by aptitude somewhere around 1.7MB. Still missing as of the 20080829 amd64 desktop (Alpha 5). I'm ok with it's removal from base, just be sure to document this on the final Intrepid Ibex information page either in the "New Features" or "Caveats" section. Otherwise you'll have many comments like the above. There isn't a page available for Alpha 5 yet, you might begin to include that information for testers so they are aware of it. I have been a long term Ubuntu user (since Warty), and I have never considered switching to another distribution. The decision to remove aptitude is certainly one way to antagonise people such as myself. I beg you to reconsider this removal. It really can't use that much space on the CD, and it is the recommended package manager in Debian. I have also encountered this on Intrepid Alpha 4. Aptitude seems superior to apt-get and has previously been included in Ubuntu base installations. The aptitude package has been part of the base install till Hardy. I think aptitude is better and smarter front end for dpkg than apt-get.
