[Bug 252140] Re: [needs-packaging] Ubuntu Tweak
Since it was dismissed from Maverick one can take the time to analyse the unofficial repos problem. It is possible for any user to add unofficial repos to the system and though everyone knows the risks of using them, after they are added to sources.list there is no clear distinction between them and the official. So the problem here would be an OFFICIAL Ubuntu package adding UNOFFICIAL repos and not the repos themselves. One easy way to solve this while, improving Ubuntu tweak, is to merge the software centre into Ubuntu tweak and adding an unofficial repos section that is clearly marked and that pops up a message like "The repositories in the unofficial repos list were not in any way revised by Canonical or the Ubuntu community and contain pre-release software. Be aware that using packages from these respos you might lead to decrease system performance or other problems." To ensure some degree of security, duplicated applications would not be allowed, i.e. since Firefox is already on the official repos only non stable versions of Firefox would be included on the unofficial repos. Also only the official applications repos would be included, i.e. Firefox would never come from a repos that is not maintained by Mozilla. In case this is no possible, another warning would pop up to tell the user that neither Canonical nor (in this example) Mozilla are responsible by that repo. -- [needs-packaging] Ubuntu Tweak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252140 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 252140] Re: [needs-packaging] Ubuntu Tweak
I am willing to assist with spelling and grammar and a name change should be easy (although would obviously need the approval of the author). I think uTweak or TweakU or similar would work without going too far from the original name. The issue of unofficial repos is another problem altogether though! I can see how this could be problematic for Ubuntu devs as it could be seen to be undermining the offical repos. OTOH the ease for newbies of adding non-official repos for popular apps is one of the main (and I'd suspect desired) components of Ubuntu Tweak. I don't think the concern is something that can be easily dismissed and I don't see how there is a way around it, without removing the functionality and thus removing one of the reasons why many install it in the first place. -- [needs-packaging] Ubuntu Tweak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252140 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 252140] Re: [needs-packaging] Ubuntu Tweak
I'm rejecting this for Maverick. Here is the email I sent to the uploader and ubuntu-archive: "I'm sorry but I am rejecting this package for now. First, there are several spelling and grammar errors in debian/control and the manpages. More importantly, with a name like 'ubuntu-tweak' it sounds like this is an official package, but there doesn't seem to be an actual approval from someone within Ubuntu (eg MOTU) in LP: #252140[1] or REVU[2]. I'm also uncomfortable with a package from the Ubuntu archive adding unofficial apt repositories without a formal review. Please take this up in the bug and once you have approval for upload, feel free to upload again. Definitely agree whole-heartedly, this is an excellent tool for power users and people who like to tweak out their Ubuntu instance. I couldn't agree more. Ubuntu Tweak is an extremely useful add-on to Ubuntu, making tasks such as ppa-purging and kernel-cleaning accessible to ordinary users. It should definitely be available in one of the default repositories. Putting it in Ubuntu Software Center as a featured app would be heavenly - more people would find out how easy it makes using Ubuntu. -- [needs-packaging] Ubuntu Tweak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252140 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
