I am, after much hesitation, closing this bug because it is old, no one have confirmed it, and I tend to see it as a wish valknut would support UTF-8, and that I doubt the undelying direct connect allows it. From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct_connect_file-sharing_application The Direct connect protocol suffers from high bandwidth usage, unusual requirements for parsing, lacklustre internationalization support, and parts that seem to have been crafted to overcome network handling bugs in older versions of Microsoft Visual Basic (which NMDC was developed in). So I think Direct connect protocol is not UTF-8 aware.
