[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2009-06-09 Thread Andres Mujica
Hi Jerry, i'm checking if this bug is still valid, reading through
comments you stated at comment #23 that kernel updates from that time
solved the issue. However it seems that this was related to compiz and
intel driver as the last few comments and per bug #259385

So i wonder, the issue that you described in this report about freezing
laptop are solved? or are the same you're testing at the bug previously
refered?

Thanks in advance for your help.

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-10-11 Thread jerrylamos
Workaround for Beta:

Besides:

sudo apt-get remove compiz
sudo apt-get remove compiz-core

I had to edit:

/etc/X11/default-display-manager
#/usr/sbin/gdm

otherwise Firefox gets an authority error and crashes.

switcher also won't load so I start a command line to halt or reboot.

I'll probably find some other bugs as well but at least it's running,
first time since initial Alpha 5. An update to Alpha 5 creamed Compiz
for the Thinkpad, most likely Compiz since it works without it.

Brian, thanks for setting me on the path to a workaround! Jerry

2008-10-08 Thread jerrylamos
Trying the gconftool-2 several times, a couple of times I was able to
get nm-applet to work. firefox-3.0.3 initialized however there was this
"Could not initialize the applications security component.." error
then firefox disappeared. This error repeats every time.

On the installed Beta, I removed Compiz using Synaptic and got the same
results. Desktop comes up, nm-applet worked, firefox started then got
"Could not initialize the applications security component" again. I
removed only the Compiz entry, not the other nine (at least) compiz
entries. Maybe I can try one at a time which is a bit time consuming.
Any way to turn "compiz off" and still have Firefox's application
security componenet work?

I'm entering this from the same install by using xfce4 which I gather
does not use compiz, but does use the exact same firefox 3.0.3 which you
can see is working and had no error message.

Thanks, Jerry

Jerry - you can use gconftool-2 after gdm has started in a tty. Then
login as normal in gdm and you should get a regular desktop session
where nm-applet and firefox-3.0 will work.

2008-10-08 Thread jerrylamos
Partial success from gconftool setting "metacity" instead of compiz:

On installed Intrepid Beta, issuing gconftool before any window manager
started then doing a sudo startx did get the Gnome desktop up.

However, on starting Firefox, got a very long message starting:
"Could not initialize the applications security component" Firefox tried
to run but couldn't access internet.

Network applet had wired network greyed out.

Are there other ways to use metacity instead of compiz on an installed
Ubuntu Intrepid? Xubuntu & Kubuntu work O.K.

CD Live, typed in the command however the Thinkpad froze up anyway.
Perhaps I didn't get the command issued in time.

Is there some way to stop CD live at a command prompt before Xwindows
starts?

Thanks much, sure looks like Compiz is implicated in the problem.

To disable compiz from a terminal or tty could you please try the
following:

'gconftool-2 --type string --set
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager "metacity"'

After doing that try logging in, from gdm, and please let me know the
results. Thanks in advance!

2008-10-07 Thread Aaron
yea I installed xubuntu-desktop and that ran fine, and its built in
compositor worked, so I thought I'd give compiz a shot. Compiz was
already installed thanks to gnome, so i just ran compiz --replace and I
got very similar results to what i got when attempting to log in to
gnome. Just a cursor and wallpaper, no panels, cursor moved with the
mouse but no responses to clicks or keyboard commands. It didnt respond
to a reset of gdm and I tried killing compiz and still nothing.

So maybe it has something to do with compiz, is there a way to manually
disable compiz when logging in to gnome?

2008-10-07 Thread sudarsha
I got a similar problem to Aaron. Installed Intrepid beta on a Toshiba
A100 laptop yesterday and I could get to the gdm screen fine. When I
login I am stuck on the blank (tan) screen.

I got around it by doing this:
1) Exit the blank screen by pressing Alt+Ctrl+Backspace.
2) Hit F10 at gdm screen and "Select Session" -> GNOME.
3) Login again selecting GNOME to be the Default session when prompted.

This seem to work for both user accounts on my laptop. Subsequent
logins work fine. I still have the problem if I try to switch to the
Guest account. I have no idea how to fix it yet. Hope this helps.

Alpha 6 hangs up, CD Live on IBM Thinkpad R31. 32 bit Celeron, 1 gHz,
Intel graphics.

Just at the point the Gnome background should show, the screen turns
black and the keyboard doesn't work except for power off.

Installed Alpha 5 with kernel 2.6.27-2 works, the updates from the
applet on the top line included kernel 2.6.27-3 plus a bunch of other
updates. This install fails the same way as the Alpha 6 CD live,
however since it is installed I can access the logs from the dual boot
Alpha 5 (without updates, of course). The gnome-panel referred to never
appears on the screen.

These are the last few lines from daemon.log:

Sep 19 07:27:40 Thinkpad x-session-manager[5431]: DEBUG(+): GsmAutostartApp:

I can certainly verify tty was killed. Any ideas of things to try? Thanks,

20080916 daily build CD Live ran and installed on my Compaq Presario,
which would seem to resolve this bug however on my IBM Thinkpad R31 the
same CD Live CD gets up to the point where the Gnome background Hardy

cursor. That's bug 259385 which was resolved now back again.

I'll try Alpha 6 when it comes out 9/18 or thereabouts.

Note that Xubuntu Alpha 4 runs fine, Kubuntu Alpha 4 runs fine, Alpha 3

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-28 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-
image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and
test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer
2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4.
Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced.
You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the
bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please
open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the
2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please
specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26
kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-25 Thread jerrylamos
1. Alpha 4 CD Live boots to the point that the desktop should load then
all activity stops and nothing on the keyboard works. I've downloaded
about three different daily builds of Alpha 4 Ubuntu with the same
result. The CD's do run on my Compaq and my Via motherboard systems.
When CD Live stops, of course, can't read any files or logs or anything
else since the keyboard is dead except for power off. Note the screen
background is either black or brown, and the cursor may move or not.
The desktop background never loads.

2. Alpha 3 runs O.K (for an alpha). I've installed it several times.
Upgrade everything results in 1. above. I've done that several times.
This Thinkpad has run Dapper, Edgy, Feisty, Gutsy, Hardy, and Intrepid
Alpha 3.

3. Alpha 3, upgrade everything else except Gnome 2, which is to say at
Alpha 4 level for everything but Gnome 2, runs O.K. (for an alpha).
I've done this twice.

4. Add just the upgrade for Gnome 2, nothing else, results in 1. above.

5. Alpha 4 CD Live Xubuntu runs O.K. for an Alpha. Kubuntu Alpha 4
runs O.K. for an alpha. No Gnome 2, no problem.

5. I'm dual booted from an Alpha 4 image for everything but Gnome 2 as
I enter this comment. Browsing the other install, the one that stops
when the Gnome desktop should load, the end of .xsession-errors follows.
Looks to me like X found the desktop, which then never appears on the
screen:

** (x-session-manager:5263): DEBUG: GsmManager: Looking for:

Hello, looking at the description it looks to me like a broken upgrade,
may you attach your ~/.xsession-errors files after trying to log in to
the account? thanks in advance.

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-22 Thread jerrylamos
Not compiz, or at least not the way Intrepid Alpha 3 uses it. Put on
the three compiz updates from my preceding note, desktop came up fine.
Ubuntu ran O.K. (for an Alpha).

Put on just the gnome 2 changes from my preceding note. Intrepid with
Gnome 2 fails.

Boot proceeds up to a brown screen, the cursor changes into a little
whirly, then the whirly stops. That's it. No desktop. Nothing on the
keyboard works except power off.

The Thinkpad is a dual boot. I can boot up the other image, an Alpha 3,
and look at any logs or messages on the dead Alpha 4 if someone has an
idea what to look for. Early in this bug report I attached a few things
I saw.

Thanks, Jerry

I'd guess it is compiz-* causing the problem. Just to be clear, the
current situation is that you do not get a desktop after logging in
correct?

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-21 Thread jerrylamos
Gnome 2 is causing the problem. If everything else but Gnome 2 is updated, it
still runs (this is from the Thinkpad R31 now, without Gnome 2). Alpha 4
Xubuntu runs, with XFCE desktop. Alpha 4 Kubuntu runs, with KDE desktop.
Alpha 4 with Gnome 2 CD Live fails. That's a whole pile of packages for me to
test, since it takes a couple hours to install Alpha 3, update everything else
(approaching 300 packages) then try some selection of the following. I don't
know what packages require which others to run:
gconf2
gconf2-common
gnome-about
gnome-app-install
gnome-applets
gnome-applets-data
gnome-icon-theme
gnome-keyring
gnome-orca
gnome-panel
gnome-panel-data
gnome-session
gnome-settings-daemon
gnome-terminal
gnome-terminal-data
libgconf2-4
libgnome2-0
libgnome2-common
libgnomeui-0
libgnomeeui-common
compiz-gnome
compiz-core
compiz-plugins

If you could add the full output of 'sudo apt-get upgrade', without
continuing, we might be able to guess which package is causing the
problem.

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-18 Thread jerrylamos
Gnome updates cause Ubuntu to freeze on IBM Thinkpad R31.

Installed 217 of 234 updates to 20080812 and running O.K. (for an
Alpha). This should bring Intrepid Ibex up to current level of Alpha 4
except for Gnome, which is at Alpha 3.

Omitted 17 updates and is running O.K. as I enter this comment. Alpha 4
freezes with black screen on this R31.

Xubuntu with XFCE and Kubuntu with KDE run as well as Ubuntu so long as
the Gnome updates are omitted.

Any way to narrow down further? I wouldn't know which of the 17 Gnome
up;dates would run independently of the other updates.

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-18 Thread jerrylamos
Alpha 4 as of 20080818 build, Ubuntu CD Live gets black screen and
keyboard unresponsive about the time Gnome would load the background
Hardy Heron (I presume Intrepid Ibis background not ready yet). This is
on IBM Thinkpad R31.

Xubuntu 20080818 boots & runs fine (for an Alpha).

Kubuntu 20080818 boots & runs fine (for an Alpha).

Alpha 3 ran O.K. as of 20080812. The updates on 20080813 produce the
black screen. I've tried omitting a number of the 194 updates to see
which one causes the failure, for example all 11 X updates, however
haven't been able to narrow down the change that kills Ubuntu on the
Thinkpad R31.

Testing is a bit laborious (!) involving installing 20080812 and
deleting some updates.

Let me see if I can tell what updates would involve Gnome but not XFCE
and not KDE..

Any hints anyone?

Jerry

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-15 Thread jerrylamos
Tried 20080812 install again.
1. Tried xserver-xorg-video-intel update from Synaptic. Thinkpad ran O.K.
2. Re-install, tried xserver intel again from updates, required un-selecting
165 updates. Oof.
 ran O.K.
3. Tried acpi update. Required un-selecting 164 updates. Oof. ran O.K.
4. Tried doing the remaining 164 updates. Re-boot results in brown screen,
cursor moves, keyboard dead. System frozen.
5. Boot CD Live, attached is syslog from the hard drive after the freeze.

I'm out of ideas on 20080812. Will try more Alpha 4 CD live options.
Last time I tried it, got black screen i.e. dead X window support.

Any ideas or info of any use to anyone?

Jerry

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-14 Thread jerrylamos
The /proc/version of daily build 20080812 which runs O.K. (for an alpha) CD
Live and installed, says:
Ubuntu 2.6.26-5.14-generic

Alpha 4 also gets black screen and unresponsive keyboard.

Booting Alpha 4 CD Live with quiet splash removed:

-- messages look fairly normal to me, typical boot stream.
-- X starts
-- screen goes brown with cursor
-- "User ubuntu will login in x seconds" message so I let it log in
-- screen goes brown with cursor
-- bunch of clucking out of CD drive
-- screen goes black with no cursor. Flashing black.

Ctrl-Alt-F1 & F2 no luck. Beat keys around a bit. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
finally got a text screen. Keyboard unresponsive on Ctrl-Alt-F1, did
get a command line on Ctrl-Alt-F2.

/proc/version
Linux version 2.6.26-5-generic ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) (gcc version 4.3.1 (Ubuntu
4.3.1-8ubuntu3) ) #1 SMP Sun Aug 10 20:30:28 UTC 2008

less /var/syslog says Fatal X error

I don't notice anything unusual in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

>From CD Live, mounted a hard drive partition and copied syslog onto it.
Booted installed 20080812 on the R31 and networked syslog over onto this
system, attached.

Let me know if I can provide anything else. From this user's standpoint
sure looks like an X windows problem.

Included in the updates that black screen the X31 are:

xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-geode
xserver-xorg-video-intel
xserver-xorg-video-radeon

>From lspci -vvnn the Thinkpad R31 uses Intel Corporation 82830 CGC
[Chipset Graphics Controller] [8086:3577] [rev 04]

Let me try CD Live (install if I have to) and do just the xserver-xorg-
video-intel update. Maybe later this evening.

Thanks for your comments on this bug.

Jerry

[Bug 257450] Re: Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 20080812 updates freeze Thinkpad R31

2008-08-14 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Hi Jerry,

Thanks for testing and the bug report. This bug did not have a package
associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked
at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right
package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . For now I'm
going to assign this bug to the "linux" kernel package.

Can you also gather some additional information for me. I'd like to
know the exact kernel version you use when running the 20080812 daily
build. You can find this by doing 'cat /proc/version_signature' . When
it then asks you to update, is the kernel one of the suggested updates?
Which kernel does it say it's updating to? Can you then test just
updating the kernel - don't update any other packages . Does the
updated kernel result in your system being unable to boot? This will at
least help us narrow down that this is in fact a kernel issue.

When trying to boot with the 20080813 Daily build and you are unable to
boot, can you try booting with the 'quiet' and 'splash' options removed.
Are any interesting error messages displayed on your screen when the
system hangs/freezes? If so, would you be able to take a digital photo
of your screen and attach it to this bug report?

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
