Setting the status of this bug back to confirmed. The problem is that upgrade-manager -d unintentionally switched our configurations to launch various programs in-place of nautilus. I don't think it's gthumbs fault, as my upgrade to intrepid resulted in the above behaviour with kaffeine. I don't remember doing such thing but taking a look to any folder properties shows me that gthum is selected as the default application to open it. Changing it back to nautilus fixes the problem.
