Well this still hasn't been fixed for all hardware. My 3c589D pcmcia
card is not supported. When I pull out the cable there is no
confirmation from nm-applet.

The network interface should not be shut down when the cable is unplugged.
What if I plug it in again?  What if it's a transient error?

Some other operating systems used to have the bug that they shut down the
network interface when the cable was unplugged.  This was extremely
annoying, and those operating systems have since been fixed.
