@Kaspars Krampis, care to open a new bug report as it seems you have a slightly different bug than the original bug reporter as inare has commented this is no longer an issue. It's likely a hardware specific issue so it's best if those have separate bug reports anyways. Ok, I think, I've found the problem.
We have a classroom of identical (HP dx5150MT) machines running Ubuntu
8.04 and some of them boots the 8.10 Beta Alternate CD normally, but
some of them don't ('No common CD-ROM drive was detected' message
appears). I looked into dmesg outputs and found out that those who boot,
have CD-ROM set as IDE Primary Master, but those who don't - Primary
Slave (HDD is SATA drive, so CD-ROM is the only PATA device).
Primary Master (boots 8.10):

Hello, the same here. Ubuntu 8.10 Beta Alternate i386. I added dmesg, syslog and lspci. Made on the same machine running 8.04 and 8.10. Actually the same goes for Desktop CD (both 32 and 64 bit), it just drops to (initramfs) after a while and nothing boots. It doesn't detect CD device (all previous versions since 5.10 have done it correctly). Hi ianare, I'd too be interested in seeing dmesg output if you are able to capture and attach it. I'm also curious if you'd be willing to test the latest daily images as I believe they should have the newer 2.6.27-3 kernel which was rebased with the upstream 2.6.27-rc6 kernel. If both the alternate and desktop CDs break, that's a pretty sure sign that the CD driver for your hardware is not very happy.
