After creating an xorg.conf file and modifying /etc/pam.d/common-auth,, pressing return is no longer necessary. However, the fingerprint scanner just plain does not work with some things, gnome-screensaver and gksudo being two of them. I have the same problem (I have T61). I have to press Enter after swiping.
