There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. My 'solution' was similar - the profile I was using was on a drive that was not mounted at boot. I have exactly the same behavior on a fresh install of Ubuntu Intrepid. Thunderbird lauched correctly only once, then became unusable. Installing thunderbird-gnome-support changed nothing. did you reboot in between? I had exactly the same problem. My solution was to check the alphanumeric foldername (.default) in the /home/username /.mozilla-thunderbird folder. I discovered I had appended the word NEW to the 8 character.default name during a file transfer from another computer.
