Hi. Probably it's a very old thread, but I hope somebody can help me there.. I've got some troubles with sound after upgrading my Lenovo T61 to Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic.. All sound seems to disappear completely. When I run Gnome ALSA Mixer or System - Preferences - Sound there are no any devices found at all... Also `aplay -l` tells this: aplay: device_list:223: no soundcards found... and `killall pulseaudio pulseaudio` this: E: pid.c: Daemon already running. E: main.c: pa_pid_file_create() failed. Is there anything I can do with this? Can you also confirm this issue exists with the most recent Karmic Koala 9.10 Alpha release? ISO CD images are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/ . If the issue remains with Karmic it would be great to then also test the latest upstream mainline kernel available. This will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. I seem to be seeing this same behaviour on my dell studio 15. Sound worked correctly on Hardy Heron. Right now ALSA sound does not work (clicking and crackling) but an OSS sound test does work. If I reboot back to the Hardy kernel which is still installed on my system sound does work, with everything else the same. You might try using OSSv4 http://www.4front-tech.com/download.cgi Not free software but at least you have sound until the problem is solved. I'm also having issues with alsa after upgrading to 8.10 I hope this will help http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=670ca6fa2eba0a78075ecc387bafa8243f90b9d7 I was unable to get ALSA working by running $ killall pulseaudio $ pulseaudio OSS also stops working after a while. Do you need any more info to change the bug status from Incomplete to something that will urge someone to find the problem. I'm also using a ThinkPad T61 with snd_hda_intel, and ALSA stopped working when I upgraded from Hardy today.
