I tried this, and it didn't work. The reason is that these are expected to be XML schemas, and a zero-length file isn't a valid XML file. So the removal process still fails. I did figure out how to uninstall gnome-games-data, however. I simply found where the pre-remove script was, and edited to remove the offending line. The pre-removal script was located in: /var/lib/dpkg/info/gnome-games-data.prerm This script was calling the gconf-schemas command with non-existent schemas. Commenting out this line (I actually put an echo at the start of the offending line) allowed me to do an: apt-get remove gnome-games-data successfully. I'm having a similar problem and I'm quite certain it is not a file system problem (fsck is happy). I think there is something wrong with the pre/post installation scripts for the gnome-games-data package. @Greg: The error message indicates that you might have a filesystem error on your computer. i have the same problem installing gnome-games. i eventually purged
gnome-games and gnome-games-data from my computer. now, attempting to
install the package with aptitude produces a similar error. here is
