disabled the RANDR service in KDE it's fine.

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD

2008-12-04 Thread manler
Hello,

I am having the same trouble with Asus p5q-em. Im running gnome and I
haven't found a way to stop the flickering. Has anyone found a solution
that works with gnome?

My bug report is located here -- https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/303720

I tried the tip from Kai to change the mode but that didn't do anything
for me.

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD

2008-11-19 Thread Kai Jauch
I was able to stop the flickering with my Samsung SyncMaster 214T (connected
via DVI) and the X4500HD.
xrandr --verbose lists two modes for 1600x1200. Using the preferred one
(which is selected automatically on startup) causes flickering, using the other
one has worked fine for the last 40 minutes.

Relevant lines from xrandr --verbose:
  1600x1200 (0x49) 162.0MHz +HSync +VSync +preferred
h: width 1600 start 1664 end 1856 total 2160 skew0 clock 75.0KHz
v: height 1200 start 1201 end 1204 total 1250 clock 60.0Hz
  1600x1200 (0x4a) 161.0MHz -HSync +VSync *current
h: width 1600 start 1704 end 1880 total 2160 skew0 clock 74.5KHz
v: height 1200 start 1201 end 1204 total 1242

Mode 0x4a works without flickering.

I have this problem aswell. Asus P5Q-EM with G45 chipset. VGA output
works fine. With DVI output I can easily reproduce the flickering by
opening 2 terminal windows and do a find / in both of them. Lowering
the resolution one step stops the flickering but not a viable
resolution.

I've tested both the distro supplied libdrm2 and intel driver aswell as
the ones supplied here: (drm 2.4.0 and intel 2.5)

People are referring to worked around this bug by disabling the xrandr

KDE flickering on older 9x5 chipsets is a different bug to this one, that's a
high level desktop bug where KDE is doing something wrong with Xrandr.
This bug is about flickering on very new chipsets (e.g. in my case it's a G45,
or X4500HD depending on your choice of terminology).

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD

2008-10-15 Thread Adric Riedel
I managed to mostly solve the problem; on page 5 of the link paxman1
posted (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3098015.60)
someone named ilowman suggested going to System
Settings-Advanced-Service Manager and turning off Detecting RANDR
(monitor) changes

The effect was immediate; my screen now flickers only when loading
KDE4.1, and when opening System Settings-Display. This seems to solve
the glitches where the screen briefly redraws in a shifted position from
normal; the people at that link seemed to think there are two kinds of
graphical glitches going on here.

One downside, however, is that while I can still switch screen
resolutions to 1024x768 (and possibly others) I cannot switch back; I
lost my first draft of this comment when X restarted instead.

I have the same problem on my Latitude D820 with intel chipset.

lspci |grep VGA gives the folowing:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS,
943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

It's starts after the login screen. It starts flickering every 10 seconds on
the second screen. And it never stops.
My laptop screen is stable. The resolution i use on both screens are: 1680x1050
I use xrandr for using dualscreen, but even disabling that doesn't stop the
flickering.

There are no updates available at the moment, so i'm working on the
latest version of Intrepid.

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD

2008-10-13 Thread Adric Riedel
My laptop has this problem (filed duplicate bug report by accident).
It's an Inspiron 6000 running Ubuntu Intrepid 32bit; Intel 915 Graphics,
and the thing flickers every 5 to 7 seconds, as pointed out here.

I had this thing connected to a projector earlier today (no problems
with detection; it automatically resized the displays to 1024x768 and so
on) and the flicker manifested as the overhead projector losing the
laptop's signal every seven seconds or so. As far as I can recall the
laptop screen itself was absolutely stable while this was going on; the
NO SIGNAL ON RGB 1 just kept popping up every seven seconds, for one
second.

Unlike the OP, I ONLY see this problem while running X. The display is
perfectly solid all the way through the BIOS to the Kubuntu setup
screens, to KDM itself where the problem begins. On shutdown, the
display is stable as far as I can tell; shutdown is fast and requires a
few mode changes of its own.

2008-10-13 Thread Julian Edwards
Also happens for me, Dell D630 laptop (64 bit) with Intel GMA 965. I
just upgraded from Kubuntu Hardy to Intrepid so I've no idea if this is
KDE4 related.

It looks like DPMS is kicking in briefly. The laptop's screen stays on
while this happens.

I made it stable by using xrandr to a lower resolution and then xrandr
back to the native VGA resolution (1920x1200 in my case).

Well...I was able to get the Ubuntu Live-CD to flicker the same way as
Kubuntu. It doesn't do it at the 7 to 12 second frequency though. Only
when you do a certain function and that is:

Control Center -- Hardware -- Screen Resolution.

As soon as I click Screen Resolution, it flickers just like mine is
doing under Kubuntu. The only difference is that is stops once the
Screen Resolution window appears.

NOTE: THIS MIGHT NOT BE AN XORG BUG, BUT A KDE / KDM BUG.
http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3098015.30

flickers. also goes black maybe 400 ms especially when scrolling opera
or firefox of scrolling with mouse in konsole. Going black does not
seem to be dependent on cpu load. It happens under light or heavy cpu
load.

Most annoying is that a 2 mm band that is maybe 2 cm long occurs
everytime I type, but the placement on the screen can occur anywhere in
the field of the web page in Opera (firefox also I believe). It is
always on the left edge, but random placement top to bottom. The band
appears to be black, and is more like 50 to 100 ms in duration.

btw, the skinny black band that appears when typing also appears on the
desktop when typing in konsole or abiword or open office. Always on the
left edge.

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD

2008-10-09 Thread MoonRise
I can verify this with my ACER 3618 laptop with 2GB RAM and the Intel
GMA915. I have tested on other machines that have the GMA3100 display
card and it does not occur with those, at least not that can be seen by
the eye. Running Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 up to date as of 2008-10-09
8:00am EDT. The flickering occurs between 7 and 12 seconds, do it is
very periodic. Why it does not affect the GMA3100 when it is using the
same driver, I'm not sure, but it could have to do how it is connecting
to the GMA915 vs GMA3100. I've read of a lot of this problem on the
Ubuntu and Kubuntu sites.

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD

2008-10-09 Thread Chris Jones
MoonRise: This seems to be very hardware specific. I think the driver is
somehow programming the chip incorrectly because once the flickering starts it
doesn't stop, even rebooting into the BIOS continues to do it for me.
The only way I can stop it is by powering off, or booting Windows (and then
obviously it starts again when I go back to X)

2008-10-09 Thread MoonRise
Hmmm... I don't have this issue with XP, which is on this machine as a
chekc in see kind of thing, but I really never noticed it in BIOS
either, just when I log in to Kubuntu. When playing around with the
earlier Alpha Live CDs, I never noticed a Flicker, it has started
recently and to me severely. Is there anything I can add here to try
and find what's going on?

I have experienced the same as well. I have an ASUS P5Q-EM . I am glad I
found this, as I had filed a separate bug but hadn't seen any response.
