[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD
I managed to mostly solve the problem; on page 5 of the link paxman1 posted (http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3098015.60) someone named ilowman suggested going to System Settings-Advanced-Service Manager and turning off Detecting RANDR (monitor) changes The effect was immediate; my screen now flickers only when loading KDE4.1, and when opening System Settings-Display. This seems to solve the glitches where the screen briefly redraws in a shifted position from normal; the people at that link seemed to think there are two kinds of graphical glitches going on here. One downside, however, is that while I can still switch screen resolutions to 1024x768 (and possibly others) I cannot switch back; I lost my first draft of this comment when X restarted instead. -- [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275152 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 275152] Re: [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD
My laptop has this problem (filed duplicate bug report by accident). It's an Inspiron 6000 running Ubuntu Intrepid 32bit; Intel 915 Graphics, and the thing flickers every 5 to 7 seconds, as pointed out here. I had this thing connected to a projector earlier today (no problems with detection; it automatically resized the displays to 1024x768 and so on) and the flicker manifested as the overhead projector losing the laptop's signal every seven seconds or so. As far as I can recall the laptop screen itself was absolutely stable while this was going on; the NO SIGNAL ON RGB 1 just kept popping up every seven seconds, for one second. Unlike the OP, I ONLY see this problem while running X. The display is perfectly solid all the way through the BIOS to the Kubuntu setup screens, to KDM itself where the problem begins. On shutdown, the display is stable as far as I can tell; shutdown is fast and requires a few mode changes of its own. -- [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275152 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Also happens for me, Dell D630 laptop (64 bit) with Intel GMA 965. I just upgraded from Kubuntu Hardy to Intrepid so I've no idea if this is KDE4 related. It looks like DPMS is kicking in briefly. The laptop's screen stays on while this happens. I made it stable by using xrandr to a lower resolution and then xrandr back to the native VGA resolution (1920x1200 in my case). ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log.gz http://launchpadlibrarian.net/18495166/Xorg.0.log.gz -- [Intrepid] Screen flicker/resync on X4500HD https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/275152 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well...I was able to get the Ubuntu Live-CD to flicker the same way as Kubuntu. It doesn't do it at the 7 to 12 second frequency though. NOTE: THIS MIGHT NOT BE AN XORG BUG, BUT A KDE / KDM BUG. http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=3098015.30 flickers. also goes black maybe 400 ms especially when scrolling opera or firefox of scrolling with mouse in konsole. Going black does not seem to be dependent on cpu load. It happens under light or heavy cpu load. Most annoying is that a 2 mm band that is maybe 2 cm long occurs everytime I type, but the placement on the screen can occur anywhere in the field of the web page in Opera (firefox also I believe). It is always on the left edge, but random placement top to bottom. I can verify this with my ACER 3618 laptop with 2GB RAM and the Intel GMA915. Running Kubuntu Intrepid 8.10 up to date as of 2008-10-09 8:00am EDT. The flickering occurs between 7 and 12 seconds, do it is very periodic. Why it does not affect the GMA3100 when it is using the same driver, I'm not sure, but it could have to do how it is connecting to the GMA915 vs GMA3100. MoonRise: This seems to be very hardware specific.
