This was on the Intrepid Beta. OK, so apparently the issue still exists then. Which particular driver version did you install? It's a known bug (bug 251107 and bug 270846) that versions 71 and 96 don't work with intrepid. If you manage to reproduce the problem, it would be interesting to get the output of apt-cache show nvidia-glx-173 from a terminal (before you run apt-get update to fix the problem).
