Now running Kubuntu 8.10, with updates. This doesn't exhibit the blank screen problem reported by zerg0 above, but does have the wallpaper issue described above. xorg seems to be ok running from install on hard drive. Similar results here, with nvidia GeForce 7600. After startup of live CD (Kubuntu 8.10 rc1), a glimpse of the desktop is shown, then it goes blank.
