Similar issue - using a Gateway Lt2005U (Acer is mother company of Gateway) External Mic works fine Internal Mic does not work well - if I adjust sound settings to amplify @ 100% and then record I can get something @ low quality. Added self as affected - Ubuntu 9.10 on Acer TravelMate 8100. Internal audio appears in System Prefences/Sound/Hardware (analog stereo duplex) but the levels indicator, and Sound Recorder, only show even noise. I have an Acer TravelMate 5730. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 but cannot record sound from either an external microphone or the internal microphone, all I hear is static. I have tried recording in the 'Sound Recorder' and also in 'Cheese'. As a Linux newbie I would like to be informed of a simple resolution to this issue. The fix mentioned has been incorporated in mainline kernel since v2.6.29. If you could also test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine this issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag.
