[Bug 282536] Re: LIBATA with PATA_VIA causes ATAPI PATA devices to hang with HPET enabled
The reporter ceased responding as: a) No one with the ability to fix the bug has looked at it b) the bug didn't get fixed c) it clearly has a lot of "me too" responses d) it was confirmed in mainline before the useless "upgrade to the new version of ubuntu and then bother us if it's still broken" message e) the reporter has come to the conclusion launchpad has become a place of bugs to languages and be ignored, rather than be fixed f) the pata drives were removed and the system no longer runs Ubuntu so I could have a working system, in a timely manner. I wish all thoses stilll experiencing the bug the best of luck resolving it - but I suspect where possible, replacing the hardware with non-pata versions would be the most expedient work around, as I honestly no longer expect this to be fixed. -- LIBATA with PATA_VIA causes ATAPI PATA devices to hang with HPET enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282536 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've got the same chip in an Asus board. Ubuntu fails to boot whenever I've got a second optical drive connected (hangs very early in device detection). In Jaunty, the workaround "hpet=disable" works, but in lucid it does'nt any more, other sources make me believe the parameter disappeared. Sill a problem in Kubuntu 64 9.10 with 2.6.31-17-generic on an Asus A8V motherboard (VT82C586A IDE controller chip-set) Does anyone know whether this is EVER going to be fixed by the Kernel developers, after all it is hardly trivial! I'm having a problem with a Brand New Pioneer DVR-A18L Series drive. A work college with same VT8x chip-set has exactly the same problems with his two Pioneer IDE DVD drives (they work under Windows) Bug is easy to reproduce, burn a DVD with K3B, get it to verify the DVD. DVD Ejects but when reloaded, nothing is displayed. Problem does not seem to be apparent using an LG SATA drive (SATA chipset VT8251) although I do have pci=nomsi kernel parameter loaded. http://mylinuxramblings.wordpress.com/2010/02/04/linux-hell-via- southbridge-vt8251-sata-ii-controller/ -- LIBATA with PATA_VIA causes ATAPI PATA devices to hang with HPET enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282536 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hi Yagisan, Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 282536 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. I went and tested a vanilla 2.6.29.1 kernel, and the problem still exists there. it isn't triggered by suspend or resume, as it's been affecting my server box, and I certainly don't use suspend and resume on that. Unfortunately I haven't been able to convince my ppa to build those kernels (some sort of issue with ABI's and sadly the ubuntu kernel package is poorly documented on how to actually update that) I'm quite certain that the timing code for the libata versions is broken, but it's not immediately obvious to me exactly where or how to fix it. all I can suggest is that the old ide driver and the new libata driver should be both closly examined and the libata driver should be adjusted as needed to match the ide driver. -- LIBATA with PATA_VIA causes ATAPI PATA devices to hang with HPET enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/282536 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 282536] Re: LIBATA with PATA_VIA causes ATAPI PATA devices to hang with HPET enabled
I'm getting a very similar message with the Intrepid amd64 kernel. I've also compiled 2.6.29.1 with SLAB and that also produces the error. I have two Sony IDE DVD-ROM Drives that lock up as soon as these errors start appearing in the logs. relevant portion of dmesg: [ 1360.017031] ata4.01: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1360.017045] ata4.01: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 1360.017054] ata4.01: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/b0 tag 0 [ 1360.017055] cdb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [ 1360.017056] res 51/20:03:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/b0 Emask 0x5 (timeout) [ 1360.017059] ata4.01: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 1360.017081] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1360.421238] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1360.453232] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1361.555496] ata4: EH complete [ 1400.021132] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1400.021145] ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 1400.021153] ata4.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 [ 1400.021154] cdb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [ 1400.021155] res 51/20:03:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x5 (timeout) [ 1400.021158] ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 1400.021179] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1400.425231] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1400.457225] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1400.729058] ata4: EH complete [ 1405.729032] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1405.729044] ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 1405.729051] ata4.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 [ 1405.729052] cdb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [ 1405.729053] res 51/20:03:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x5 (timeout) [ 1405.729056] ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 1405.729077] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1406.133230] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1406.165223] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1409.448316] ata4: EH complete [ 1425.805042] ata4.01: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 1425.805052] ata4.01: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/b0 tag 0 [ 1425.805053] cdb 1e 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [ 1425.805054] res 40/00:02:00:08:00/00:00:00:00:00/b0 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [ 1425.805057] ata4.01: status: { DRDY } [ 1425.805078] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1426.209230] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1426.241239] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1431.241032] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1431.241041] ata4.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x5) [ 1431.241062] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1431.645229] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1431.677222] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1436.805565] ata4: EH complete [ 1495.805040] ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 1495.805050] ata4.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 [ 1495.805051] cdb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [ 1495.805052] res 40/00:03:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x4 (timeout) [ 1495.805054] ata4.00: status: { DRDY } [ 1495.805075] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1496.209229] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1496.241223] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1500.816927] ata4: EH complete [ 1540.025032] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1540.025043] ata4.00: limiting speed to UDMA/25:PIO4 [ 1540.025048] ata4.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen [ 1540.025056] ata4.00: cmd a0/00:00:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 tag 0 [ 1540.025057] cdb 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 [ 1540.025057] res 51/20:03:00:00:00/00:00:00:00:00/a0 Emask 0x5 (timeout) [ 1540.025060] ata4.00: status: { DRDY ERR } [ 1540.025081] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1540.429231] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/25 [ 1540.461225] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1545.461033] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1545.461041] ata4.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x5) [ 1545.461063] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1545.865230] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/25 [ 1545.897223] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1550.897031] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1550.897039] ata4.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x5) [ 1550.897042] ata4.00: limiting speed to UDMA/25:PIO3 [ 1550.897063] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1551.301245] ata4.00: configured for UDMA/25 [ 1551.333223] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1556.333032] ata4.00: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1556.333040] ata4.00: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x5) [ 1556.333043] ata4.00: disabled [ 1556.333054] ata4.01: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x40) [ 1556.333072] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1556.713230] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1561.713031] ata4.01: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1561.713039] ata4.01: TEST_UNIT_READY failed (err_mask=0x5) [ 1561.713043] ata4.01: limiting speed to UDMA/33:PIO3 [ 1561.713063] ata4: soft resetting link [ 1562.093244] ata4.01: configured for UDMA/33 [ 1567.093032] ata4.01: qc timeout (cmd 0xa0) [ 1567.
