Great news! There's a workaround which actually works, not only under X but under console as well! Full credits and thanks go to Vojtech Pavlik for a) taking time to analyze my bug report and my output, b) describing the bug and finding where the problem lies, c) suggesting me the workaround. If you look at the Linux Bugzilla bug report (http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12230), the explanation points to a double-side bug: 1) the keyboard is sometimes initialized in raw mode instead of translated mode; 2) in raw mode, the AltGr key is mistakenly mapped to scancode 0x91 (hex) instead of 91 (dec). Currently, there is no solutions for #1 (some modifications to the i8042 driver's initialization parameters will probably be done in the future). BUT: you can circumvent #2 by typing: "(sudo) setkeycodes 91 100" for reassigning the right keycode to the wrongly scancode-mapped AltGr key. This solutions seems fully functional to me. Vojtech tells me (I still haven't tried) that this command should not hurt even on right boots, since the 0x91 scancode is unused. Vojtech Pavlik, the maintainer for the "AT keyboard" Linux driver, told me that a way to force the keyboard in "raw" mode (which is what happens on buggy boots) is to boot with "i8042.direct=1". Unfortunately, there is not the opposite option, i.e.: you cannot force the keyboard in "translated" mode (it should be its natural state). Additional details on the Linux bug report... Please note that my apport-collect uploads were taken with a live cd of 9.10-alpha4 (and the problem still persists), while I'm usually running 8.04. Also, during the live cd experience, all proprietary drivers were NOT loaded. The results, however, seem to be the same. I have to confirm that using "i8042.reset" did not work properly for me, too. On one boot the system did neither react on keyboard nor touch-pad. But for me it was only one time in about 20 boots. I had to use "i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop" instead of just "i8042.reset", otherwise my keyboard hanged up on cold boots 80% of the times! Hi, I got the same problem, even though it happens randomly, not mattering if I did a reboot or a cold boot. It specially affects the AltGr-Key and as I've read in several forums happens on some Dell-models. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 which in the last 18 months didn't have any problems with the keyboard until now. As I updated ubuntu to intrepid, the bios to 2.6.3 and the kernel to 2.6.27-7-generic almost at the same time I can't say exactly where the problem lies. Suppose it is the kernel. Is there a fix?
