I had the same problem (nvidia proprietary drivers here) but for me it would restart X every time I tried to run gnome-appearance-properties (same as Ctrl-Alt-BkSp). I removed libvisual-0.4-plugin and restarted X; everything is back to normal now. I did: sudo apt-get remove libvisual-0.4-plugins Fixed here as well. I was able to reinstall the package sudo apt-get install libvisual-0.4-plugins and the problem is still not back. Beware, it uninstalled lives. i can confirm this bug on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61. Trying to change themes has no effect, all the decorations seem very basic, also 3D acceleration is gone or looks very ugly.
