[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
Thanks for the update Vincenzo. I'll go ahead and close this bug for now. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Won't Fix -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
I've quit cooperation with ubuntu because of the lack of a privacy policy for users data, leading to wide acceptance across developers of the idea that collecting users data without their prior authorization is entirely normal. In any case I don't have means at the moment to help anybody with this bug, as you can read in comment #11. -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
Hi Vincenzo, This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux 288627 Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.] ** Tags added: needs-kernel-logs ** Tags added: needs-upstream-testing ** Tags added: kj-triage ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
I came back and will never see that network again, however in the latest days I had the chance to try with an external USB wifi card (realtek) and it didn't work either so it must be something in the access point. Maybe NETGEAR was unicode? Is there someone owning a netgear router? Can you confirm that netgear routers have unicode network names? I remember having read something like unicode in network names are broken in ubuntu. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = New -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Attaching a diff of the new syslog with the old one, thanks for your explanation. ** Attachment added: syslog.diff http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19658731/syslog.diff -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
Thanks for the attachments. There is actually a way to connect - in network-manager applet there is an option Connect to other wireless network, right? Type NETGEAR and it will try to connect. Then wait a minute and please attach your syslog. It can help a lot in tracking down the problem. //magnus -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
Magnus, thanks for your reply. Please be aware that I will be here only for another 15 days, so if you need some more debug info (I don't know if there are tools to read raw packets even without being associated to an AP, for example) we both will want to be quick :) I am attaching the information required, except for the log which is completely uninformative: I have no means to attempt to associate as the network is not listed at all. The network is called NETGEAR and _sometimes_ I can see an alternate network called C.D.NETGEAR which is protected. Don't know if it's a bug or a truly different network but I never see it in windows. Also there is nothing in the logs when scanning. ** Attachment added: iwlist_scanning http://launchpadlibrarian.net/19519438/iwlist_scanning -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 288627] Re: cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network
Thanks for reporting this bug. However more information is needed. There seems to be quite a few reported bugs affecting iwl3945 and the Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG card. Search for iwl3945 and see if you are affected by any of them. Also there is a known problem with this driver which was included in the release notes of Ubuntu 8.10. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/810#Only US wireless channels enabled by default on Intel 3945 If you still think this is a new bug, please give us the output from the following commands to start with: * uname -a * lshw -C network * iwscan scanning * cat /etc/lsb-release Then restart your computer (ok, not reealy needed, but makes it a little easier to read the log). If possible, try to connect. Please copy the file /var/log/syslog and attach to this bug.

Luke, could you please revert the mistake you made as soon as you can? I can't and this bug needs to be fixed. This is a bug report, next time please ask before doing such a thing. The fact that the report contains please help does not entitle anybody to assume that a bug report is a question. I asked for help to report more information because I want to improve the quality of my report and I don't know how to report debug information on this problem. Please, in the future, read bug reports before converting them to questions. This is a bug and not a question, since my network card DOES work (as badly as the intel driver can) with any other network, and the same card DOES work under windows with this network. I had to install ubuntu under virtualbox under windows to keep on my everyday work (which, you bet it, DOES NOT include windows). -- cannot see a netgear access point running a non-password-protected network https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/288627 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
