[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
More information, it's possible to load the module with these instructions:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/705878/can-i-fix-my-corrupted-lubuntu-splash-screen-having-disabled-the-graphical-term

Looking at /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer.conf there is this comment:
# Framebuffer drivers are generally buggy and poorly-supported, and cause
# suspend failures, kernel panics and general mayhem. For this reason we
# never load them automatically.

So it seems that the reason this module does not load automatically is
intentional.

Now that the X.org driver for this chip has been removed and it relies
completely on the framebuffer module, maybe it would make sense to look
into slightly better support for the framebuffer modules?

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2016-03-28 Thread Julius Schwartzenberg
I still have this problem on Ubuntu 15.10. Note that this version does
not contain the xserver-xorg-video-sis anymore, but it does contain the
sisfb module.

Now the vesafb driver is loaded now, but it does not seem to be a
module. I tried to use the instructions from this thread to load sisfb
instead plus updating the initramfs files, but it didn't work:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1423381

I think that the in-kernel vesafb prevents sisfb from loading or it's
not properly added to the initramfs.

Should I reopen this bug or create a new one?

I'm sorry to say there's no way I can test this bug. The laptop that
suffered from the problem died.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the
original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to
reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against
the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we
may be able to pass upstream for help.

[This is an automatic notification.]

Hi braingram,

This bug was reported against an earlier version of Ubuntu, can you
test if it still occurs on Lucid?

Please note we also provide technical support for older versions of
Ubuntu, but not in the bug tracker. Instead, to raise the issue through
normal support channels, please see:

http://www.ubuntu.com/support

If you are the original reporter and can still reproduce the issue on
Lucid, please run the following command to refresh the report:

  apport-collect 290727

If you are not the original reporter, please file a new bug report, so
we can work with you as the original reporter instead (you can reference
bug 290727 in your report if you think it may be related):

  ubuntu-bug xorg

If by chance you can no longer reproduce the issue on Lucid or if you
feel it is no longer relevant, please mark the bug report 'Fix Released'
or 'Invalid' as appropriate, at the following URL:

This bug also affects Jaunty (9.04). Just did a clean install on my
Averatec C3500 Tablet and the colors very very messed up. Much like the
pictures @brettgraham had. Running xfix from the repair boot option did
not fix the issue. Adding "sisfb" to /etc/modules did fix the issue
however.

Attached are some details on my display hardware, found using lspci -v

[Bug 290727] Re: sisfb is not automatically loaded with a SiS display adapter

2009-06-05 Thread computercolin
And finally here is my Xorg.0.log when the sisfb module is loaded (I
just added it to /etc/modules).

I did not modify my xorg.conf (it is in fact blank).

I'm not sure where sisfb is supposed to be loaded, but this doesn't seem
like this fix should be too bad. At the worst, couldn't the x-server
package install scripts be modified so that they add sisfb to
/etc/modules if certain sis chipsets are found?

Here you go. I added sisfb to /etc/modules and now everything appears ok

Hi brettgraham,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log
file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.
