Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.27-7-generic

External USB disk hangs every four to six minutes, and then begins to
respond after 20 seconds or so. Corresponds with a USB bus reset of the
form:

Oct 31 06:40:11 sebastian kernel: [ 4464.904020] usb 5-5: reset high
speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 2

These attempts at a fix didn't resolve the problem:

* Removing the ehci_hcd module (same problem with uhci_hcd)
* Mounting the volume synchronously
* Turning off autosleep (setting the value to -1) for usbcore or the specific 
device
* echo Y > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/old_scheme_first
