I can confirm the problem still exists on Ubuntu 9.10, however I think it might not be the hard drive (in my case), but rather the DVD multi- drive. That link is broken. In my case I'm fairly sure the drive is not broken - the noise only occurs when the laptop is running on batteries, hence I think this is head park/unpark that occurs in power-save mode. There are various cases where hard-drives make strange sounds, sometimes the drive is slightly broken and the vendor usually agrees to a full replacement if the drive is still under maintenance. Sometimes certain settings can cause such a thing. Comment: I have a similar problem; I occasionally (every few minutes) hear a two- stage clicking noise clack-click that _might_ be the hard drive head parking/unparking. Thy Quest: Could you issue the following command at the command line sudo lshw, then search for SAMSUNG to see if see if we have the same hardware.
