[Bug 292743] Re: Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed
Jesper1266, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. Hardy desktop reached EOL on May 12, 2011. Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases We were wondering if this is still an issue on a supported release? If so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a supported release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report. apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. ** Description changed: The onboard sound card (Realtek ALC1200 chip, using ALC888 driver) does not work on my Asus P5Q-EM motherboard, when I have my NVIDIA 9600 GT graphics gard installed. This problem has been reproduced on Ubuntu 8.10 and 8.4. Across all tested kernels (different versions and types of kernels) When the PCI-express graphics card is removed from the port and the internal graphics card is used, the sound works. The sound works under windows when the graphics card is installed, therefore its not a hardware problem. The soundcard is discovered by the system (shows up as an HDA Intel ALC888 card) even when the sound does not work. The result of the test function (using gnome-sound-pro, sound playback test) is an error message: audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback. - Another bug states the installation of the NVIDIA graphics drivers as the cause og the sound failure, this is not the problem in my case. - No sound is produced after a clean install, where no graphics drivers are installed. Disbaling the nvidiadriver (replacing with nv in xorg.conf) did not change the behaviour either. - - Below is the output of lspci -vv and lspci -vvn - - Hope this helps to find a solution - - Cheers - - Jesper - - --- - - - lspci -vv - - 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset DRAM Controller (rev 03) - Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Could be because my graphics card is integrated. Confirm the: edit the/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file as root by using the command: gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base And append the following line to the file options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1 works in my case. -- Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/292743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 292743] Re: Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed
The before-mentioned fix does not work all the time. I have an Asus M3N78 PRO, running only with the onboard NVidia 8300 chipset. On Intrepid, Alsa 1.0.1.7 detects the sound board incorrectly as ALC888 instead of ALC1200. Using the before-mentioned fix, sound only works on every third or forth reboot. I'm using the latest Nvidia 180.22 drivers. I've read that before the kernel upgrade this chipset worked, but that could be heresay. -- Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/292743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I found a workaround in the Fedora forums : http://fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=203389 Translated into ubuntu the solution becomes: Add the following line: options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1 to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base It works for me!
Goran OMFG!!! It works! I have sound! Beautiful sound... I'm blasting some ACDC right now just for good measure ;-) Man, my neighbours are gonna be pissed. Thank you so much. Greatly appreciated. Few pointers for Ubuntu folks... after you make the change to the alsa- base file: 1. Go to System Preferences Sound and set the sound events, music and movies and audio conferencing all to Auto Detect. I had no sound until I did this... for me when I first reviewed this pop-up, it had everything set as HDA Intel ALC888 (Analog) ALSA. 2. Then clicking on the volume icon in the top panel, I noticed this new slider called Front. It was muted, but the master and PCM were not. I jumped up that baby and boom! Sound. Thanks Again Goran! Cheers from the West Coast of Canada! [Bug 292743] Re: Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed
Reproduced on the Asus P5Q-EM Motherboard. True - if you have an Nvidia Card in the PCI-E slot (restricted drivers or not), there is no sound. Sound is detected as the ALC888 (as shown in original bug description) for the ALC1200 Realtek Chip. If you remove the Nvidia card, and use the Intel Onboard video, the sound will work. Tried a few Nvidia Cards a 9600 and a 8800GT and finally a GTX260. ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New = Confirmed -- Sound not working when NVIDIA graphics card installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/292743 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
