I can confirm that also in my situation (8.04 with an Acer CrystalEye Webcam) an update certainly broke something. I have the same problem. This is a new problem as I was able to successfully record a video on November 17, so I suspect an update since then has broken something. Cheese 2.22.3 on Ubuntu 8.04 running on an HP Pavilion dv2934ca laptop with a built in Chicony VGA 30fps UVC Webcam (usb 04f2:b016). Also cheese does not respond to the stop recording button. I have to kill the application (X button in window manager does the job).
