I think I may have found a workaround for this problem. When I go to
Preferences Appearance Visual Effects and select None, the crashes
do not occur. When I select Normal, they occur about half the time.
I'm using an NVIDIA graphics driver on my computer. Am guessing this
plus the visual effects is causing the crashes.
