2008-12-09 Thread Matteo Settenvini
Ah-ha! Found it!
After a lot of trial and error, I isolated the issue in a specific package.

Downgrading xserver-xorg-input-evdev from version 2.1 to
1:2.0.99+git20080912-0ubuntu6, fix this issue.
If I try upgrading again, everything breaks.

So, any idea on what was touched in evdev between intrepid and jaunty?

what version of xserver-xorg-core do you have? You need 1.5.3, anything
earlier will break.

Anyone can tell me where the terminal controlling X is set?

I have not been able to reproduce this on any install yet. Do you have
any special configurations, 3rd party software installed, etc? Having
steps to reproduce from a freshly installed system would help, but I
realize that may not be very possible. :)

2008-12-08 Thread Matteo Settenvini
I have no packages installed outside of those provided by Ubuntu.
I don't own another machine to try this out, and this one is too important to
try and erase it.

If you may provide some infos about where the terminal used by X is set...?
Do some changes to the kbd module may trigger this?

Hi tchernobog,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please
attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file
from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your
/etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Okay, here we go for the first part (the lspci output).
I'll make X crash either as soon as I finish my open documents, or if I forget
about the bug and try to copy some text via CTRL+C... ;-)

Ah, I do run *without* any xorg.conf (using only hotplug).

2008-12-01 Thread Matteo Settenvini
Hitting CTRL+C kills X. This is a quick photo of what appears for a couple of
seconds, before GDM takes on again.
If you've not the time to read all the password, you can always
CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE.

As you can see, there's also my username at GDM. I removed the genuine
password.
The rest is a string searched in firefox, and what I typed in the terminal.

This time, also a lot of ^H, ^B and other strange control characters weren't
put there, because the session was too short.
Normally, they do.

[Bug 303228] Re: [jaunty] all entries (also passwords!) logged to terminal underlying the X server

2008-11-29 Thread Matteo Settenvini
I guess this is related, since CTRL+C is the copy action in X, but if
you use it in the terminal, it sends an exit signal to the foreground
process.

What happens is, I believe, that ^C is sent also to the terminal spawning X,
thus effectively killing it.
This could also explain why Xorg.?.log doesn't show any errors: X is killed on
user request.

Please, this bug renders the whole system completely unusable, other
than highly insecure.
