[Bug 304084] Re: Visualization Flicker

2009-07-03 Thread Tom
Not always. In many cases it completely crashes the system and requires
Ubuntu to be reinstalled!

If you buy one of the new range of ati card (come-on you cheap-skates!)
then of course the ati site is great.

Sorry but this has happened to me too many times to let this one go.
Good luck and take care, regards from
Tom :)

[Bug 304084] Re: Visualization Flicker

2009-04-22 Thread 1oooop
hey, I think I found out why there's no flicker in no XV mode. XV
probably stands for external video, therefore it is faster to use
XV(graphics card), but XV proves problematic because of the flickering.
So, I'd say for good performance, go XV; for good quality but bad
framerate, go no XV.

[Bug 304084] Re: Visualization Flicker

2009-04-22 Thread Tom
This and that. Seems fine to have an explanation a bit more obvious
like that :) I thought i might re-post the work-around again too
because it takes a lot of scrolling and hunting around at the moment.

Open a terminal window (Applications menu - Accessories - Terminal) and
type

gstreamer-properties

in the pop-up box choose the Video tab and from the output drop-down
list choose the option that says '... (no Xv)'

Good luck and have fun. Err if it doesn't work then you may want to
reset that setting as whatever it was before, usually 'Auto'

Have fun, regards from
Tom

[Bug 304084] Re: Visualization Flicker

2009-02-21 Thread Tom
I don't know why it's not the default. I found out that it also helps
for the same problem with nVidia cards. At least having an ati card
means that in a couple of years there will be some good OpenSource
drivers. nVidia still need to be hassled into releasing enough
information for linux developers to have something to work with.

It does seem that not everyone with an nVidia or ati card is affected
but it seems a bit random as to why some are and some aren't affected.
Perhaps that's why it's not default.

The no Xv allegedly means that that the work isn't being done by the
onboard Gpu and is thrown back to the Cpu to deal with!!! Which does
explain a few things about my Cpu and Ram usage which should never reach
50% but sometimes hovers around 40-50%.

Anyway, i'm not really sure. All that i said above is just rumour and
gossip but i think it's probably fairly accurate.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

yea it is on dual boot actually one quick question if you dont mind, i have
a 64-bit processor the turion ultra from amd. i was thinking could that also
be part of the issue and even if not should i still instead just install the
32-bit version of ubuntu? would that be better or rather give me a wider
range of software to pick from?

O, i hope you've set it up as dual boot or something rather than re-

altogether whereas Linux doesn't seem to slow-down much at all, if at
all. I'm not sure but that's the way it seems to me anyway.

Ooops, i was miles away there. So far i've found 32bit OS's seem better
than their 64bitversions but there's lots i haven't tried and i'm not
exactly an expert, just another noob really.

My theory is that 32bit versions get used and reported on more so bugs
get noticed and fixed faster. I switched to 32bit and found it easier.

2008-12-01 Thread Tom
Ahah. This looks like a known issue. Ati have only just recently been
kind enough to let non-Microsoft users use their graphics cards. It
might be a while before some decent open-source drivers become
available. A workaround in the meantime is to open a terminal window
(Applications menu - Accessories - Terminal) and type

gstreamer-properties

in the pop-up box choose the Video tab and from the output drop-down
list choose the option that says '... (no Xv)'

Good luck and have fun. Err if it doesn't work then you may want to
reset that setting as whatever it was before, usually 'Auto'

Have fun
