I forgot to mention that I was using the 64bit version. Well, maybe it is related to my hardware configuration then. Because otherwise it is a very clean installation, just a few hours old then and activating the NVIDIA driver was just the second step after the installation of the newest updates. My graphics card is a nVidia GeForce 7600GS. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better, but unfortunately I've been unable to duplicate your issue. I too noticed some problems with the NVIDIA 177 drivers, and followed the exact same process you did, however it did disable it for me. I then repeated the process and switched from the 177 drivers to the 173 drivers, which has not only worked but also given better performance.
