[Bug 317149] Re: [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications
I am experiencing a similar problem, which may be related. When using an external monitor, it will flicker from time to time harmlessly, but annoyingly. Occasionally compiz.real will segfault after one of these flickers and the screen will just display its background color. Restarting X with ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't fix this. The system must be rebooted to get it to display on the monitor again. I am running a Dell Inspirion 6400 with Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML -- [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317149 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 317149] Re: [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel System: Ubuntu Intrepid (updated from hardy), up-to-date as of 2009/01/14 on Dell Latitude D620 with Intel 945GM video, 1440x900 display. Problem: GL applications flicker during display. This problem shows up in a variety of ways: 1. GL applications 'show through' overlying windows. For example: -fire up glxgears -place a console window (or kate, or firefox, or anything) over the top. The glxgears window decoration is covered, but the glx display window itself is always on top, effectively showing through the overlying window. This occurs for a number of gl applications, including the screensaver preview box on the screensaver configuration app. 2. GL applications show 'flicker boxes' - these appear to be semi-random in location and size, but are always rectangular, and flicker back and forth. When I run a full-screen GL application such as Celestia or Stellarium or (sometimes) a screensaver, I get funny boxes showing up, flickering, disappearing. (example photo attached - from Celestia, two boxes in upper left (one small, around text, one about 640x480, the other in the lower right, appearing white). Googleearth has so many artifacts it is unusable. 3. GL screensavers often (not always) display as if on a 640x480 screen. This results in something like an left-hand upper quarter screensaver, with a grey or black field for the rest of the screen (see attached). + + [lspci] + 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS, 943/940GML and 945GT Express Memory Controller Hub [8086:27a0] (rev 03) + Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:01c2] + 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27a2] (rev 03) + Subsystem: Dell Device [1028:01c2] -- [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317149 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 317149] Re: [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications
Followup - 1. If I go and 'disable desktop effects' on the system settings, the flickering seems to disappear. I haven't been able to test the small screensaver size yet. 2. I'm also observing the REALLY SLOW gl applications that David Fox reports. No gl errors (that I've seen), but really slow response. -- [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317149 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Same here - if I disable compiz then celestia seems to run OK without flickering, as does stellarium, although I still get text font corruption. Sadly, googleearth starts up, no flicker, I can see the globe in back of googleearth's start up window, but then it crashes hard. I reset the display settings to custom / compiz and googleearth still segfaults, and the other opejngl apps I have start to exhibit flickering again. 2. On the other hand, booting up a fresh Fedora 10 from CD, I get 1000-1100 fps from glxgears. [Bug 317149] Re: [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications
I'm also seeing some or all of the same things as the original poster. I'm running Intrepid on a new laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook A1110, Intel Mobile Graphics 4 series chipset (not sure if this is the same chipset as GM945 or however it's referenced.) I noticed this fairly right away after getting the laptop last month and putting 8.10 (64 bit) on it. Applications that depend heavily on 3D function poorly, or are not usable because of excessive bleed through and flickering on the display. For instance, googleearth and celestia are practically unusable. Another application that I use frequently is stellarium (i keep up with the SVN development) and although the appication is somewhat usable, much of the text is garbled on the display, which is not the case with the same code on my desktop, which uses the nvidia driver. Also I notice some problems with compiz and KDE4 that might be display related - it's caused me to revert back to gnome. If you see the attachment, check out the lower part of the screen. Much of the text that is supposed to be there (status related stuff, FPS, that sort of thing, is not readable. I inquired on the stellarium public mailing list and they suggested the problem may be related to the display driver. Other artifacts come through, for instance, when running mplayer, OK unless I add -vo ogl2 to the command line which is supposed to render ? the movie using opengl2. The movie is always getting bleedthrough from the controlling terminal, and this goes away if I omit that parameter. There is also tremendous bleedthrough when running stellarium - it settles down, but one can see the desktop flickering, alternating between it and the stellarium startup screen while stellarium starts up. If there are tweaks I'd appreciate some hints. This is an updated new Intrepid install with an unmodified xorg.conf - i.e., whatever was automagically configured during the initial install process. ** Attachment added: stellarium-000.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21348433/stellarium-000.png -- [i945GM] flicker boxes, rendering artifacts on gl applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/317149 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
