[Bug 320266] Re: Firefox spellchecker is not honoring the native language support specified in the Firefox configuration

2009-12-22 Thread nutznboltz
Inside firefox type this into the location ("URL") bar: about:config
(no spaces around the ":" in "about:config")

A warning screen will pop up. Click whatever it takes to get past it.

Find the text field called "Filter" and type "spell" into it to narrow
the list to just spell checker items.

Edit "spellchecker.dictionary" setting the string to your locale.

Alexander can you please decline the nomination there is no need for it
to be on Oarmic and as for < Karmic this isnt really a fix that we can
use AFAIK since it is not a bad bug nor is it a security bug.

2009-04-23 Thread Chris Eagan
I am also having this issue with spellings and I am glad I found this
bug because it solved my problem. However, I imagine this is going to be
very confusing to users that install Ubuntu 9.04.

Firefox on my system was actually using "en_AU" as the default. Maybe
previous versions of Ubuntu only listed the full names of the
dictionaries. If that were the case, "English / United States" would be
the default.

Re: [Bug 320266] Re: Firefox spellchecker is not honoring the native language support specified in the Firefox configuration

2009-01-30 Thread Kristian Erik Hermansen
Hi Chris,

Thanks for the suggestion. This is definitely a UI quirk and bug. I
had to enable the "Check Spelling" option first in the drop-down menu.
Then I could access the "Languages" option. So strange. The correct
way to set this should be through the Firefox preferences, as my
screenshots document.

Thanks again for the heads up though. Perhaps Mozilla can fix this in
the future. Maybe I will notify upstream...

[Bug 320266] Re: Firefox spellchecker is not honoring the native language support specified in the Firefox configuration

2009-01-30 Thread Chris Conway
I had the same problem. en-US is the default GNOME language, the default
returned by "locale", and even the "preferred language for displaying
pages." But the en-GB dictionary was the spell-checking default.

This is easily fixed in the preference settings (right-click in a
textbox, choose a setting from "Languages"), but a little strange. Also,
the fix is not immediately obvious, because language settings are
displayed in many separate parts of the Firefox UI. For example, there
is no en-US module listed in the "Add-Ons -> Languages" tab, so I
thought I might have to go download one at first, but it turns out this
panel is not really relevant to the question at hand---it's not an
exhaustive list of installed language modules, only of "add-on" modules
(whatever that means).

It seems also that the dictionary setting is *only* available via a
right-click in a textbox, and not through the Preferences UI. This is
hardly intuitive.

I realize these UI infelicities aren't properly reported here. I mention
them as support for the notion that the firefox package ought to set the
right defaults---fixing the setting can be confusing.
