It's not in $PATH, and in the Unix philosophy of "no news is good
news" I don't think we should add an extra string (which needs to be
translated) for this.

We had that once, but it leads to a myriad of very low-quality bug
reports against wrong packages (or no packages at all); if we get
this, we need an application which guides the reporter through filing
a bug. We don't have anything like that so far, though.

Yes, that's probably it.

But shouldn't apport-gtk at least give some response/message when you
start it without arguments?

And what about some menu entry for bug reporting? I think that could be
usefull.

2009-03-06 Thread Martin Pitt
Ah, I think you stumbled over /usr/share/applications/apport-gtk-
mime.desktop . This is not at all meant for a menu entry, but just tells
nautilus that when clicking on a .crash file it should open it with
apport-gtk.

Another thing: No reaction when clicking on it is a very bad thing.
apport-gtk should at least make a message that there are no crash-
reports right now to report (and perhaps with a question if I want to
fill in a bug report anyway).

When I click on such a link, I would expect at least *any* reaction, not
nothing, that seems always like there is something broken.

[Bug 321156] Re: apport-gtk does not do anything

2009-03-06 Thread Albert Zeyer
With the Gnome menu editor, I looked through all the available items in
my menu. A lot of them were unselected. One of these was the item
"Report bug". This item was a startlink to "/usr/share/apport/apport-
gtk" but I would have guessed that this would be a startlink to open
Launchpad with a new bug report. So I guessed wrong.

But perhaps it could be a good idea to have some "report bug" link
directly in the Gnome menu.

If you want to use apport-gtk directly, you have to call it with -f.

What do you mean with "it was already there but unselected"?

Which web page?

Ah, I added the "report bug" in the Gnome main menu (it was already
there but unselected) and I guessed that it would open the website. But
it was linked to apport-gtk, so I assumed wrong. Isn't there also a link
which opens that webpage?

'ubuntu-bug apport' did work, though.

"report bug" should have opened a webbrowser page with a Launchpad bug
reporting page; didn't it? If it doesn't, can you please open a
terminal window and do

  ubuntu-bug apport

If that still doesn't open a LP page, and prints out some stuff, can you
please copy&paste the output here?

if you just call apport-gtk without arguments, it processes the
currently pending crash reports. Presumably you just didn't have any at
that time.
