Not confirming here on ext3. Could you please try deleting the symlink
from your ~/.local/share/Trash/files folder with rm and see if that
follows the symlink too?

BTW, I've just found that the link must be an absolute, not relative
one, for this to happen. Did you try with an absolute or a relative
link?
