In evolution: -> file -> import -> next -> import a single file -> next -> select a file name: in this window you can read that if you don't know the file type, it's possible to select "Automatic" so that Evolution can try to recognize it. As I already described, there is no automatic option. The fact that it selects automatically the format is still obviously as after having selected the file name Evolution automatically select a file type and you cannot select the file type before selecting the file name.
