Hey, I had the same problem

I found out that my problem had to do with the fact that I had also
installed the package php-apc.

Assuming this is the case with your installation, go to your Synaptic
Package Manager, search for php-apc and mark it for COMPLETE removal.

Restart your apache withthis command: sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

It should work... mine did.

fyi - uninstalling typo3 resolved the problem as it reverted back to the
original php5.conf and php5.load files
