Public bug reported:

Now and then after selecting Ubuntu 8.10 in grub the boot sequence hangs
on "Starting up ...". The boot sequence just freeze and only hard boot
(by pressing the reset button) can help.

I looked at /var/log/syslog and couldn't find any entry. Looks like Ubuntu
failed to access my SATA hard drive.
The funny thing is, that normaly after a hard reboot, Ubuntu starts correctly.
I installed Ubuntu 8.10 cleanly from the CD. No Update from previous version.

My PC specification:
- Athlon Dual Core X2 5000+
- MSI K9N SLI-2F mainboard
- 2x1024 MDT DDR2 800 RAM
- Gecube 4870
- 400 GB Samsung SATA hard drive

/var/log/syslog is attached.

** Affects: ubuntu
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
