This error is because the default settings are bad (it's trying to open mutt). See bug #221362. Same here (Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit). Terminal launched with the same error and then stays empty. I have the same problem. I can't launch any terminal in gnome but if I go to Ctrl+Alt+F1 this terminal runs correctly.
