It seems that the bug occurs when the resolution is DOWNsized. That is, on my laptop without the external monitor attached: When I switch the resolution to a lower one than the full, native of my laptop screen, I am immediately kicked out of Gnome (same as reported above). And, as above, when I re-log in, the resolution is correctly lowered. However, when I then bump up the resolution back to the full, native res, the change is made correctly and Gnome correctly keeps on trukin' without kicking me out.
