The compiz setting hasn't corrected the problem. The correction must have come from changing my profile terminal bell setting in an open gnome-terminal tab. It seems like the setting isn't exactly sticky and other tabs (and new tabs or gnome-terminal windows) using the same profile aren't affected by the setting change. I will assume that disabling terminal bell for all of my profiles and closing all of my gnome-terminal windows will correct the matter, but that seems extreme. Now I've also seen the flicker just from opening or repositioning a gnome-terminal. I am using the solid background, not the transparent background option, so that should not be the cause.
