As hinted to by the error message, the output of the commands:
xprop -root | grep XKB
gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd
Might help with deciding further where the problem is. Attaching them to this 
bug report could be useful.

Keyboard may be unconfigured. You try reconfigure your keyboard setup by:
run setxkbmap -rules xorg -layout us
 (in this case us for United States keyboard layout, but use instead the 
country code which is appropriate)
