I don't think it's nautilus. some times when I have firefox open and maximized, if I open a new window the window is open but don't show up. try this: open firefox, alt-F10, open gedit, copy some thing from firefox to the gedit document, come back to firefox and now open your home folder from Places. I am using compiz (0.8.2-0ubuntu5) and still have this after updating and restarting.
