But an option is to have pbuilder-dist (and more generally, all other scripts) check for the binaries they need and prompt the user to install them if not present. You are missing package «debootstrap». Perhaps it should be added to ubuntu-dev-tools as a Suggests? Siegfried and James, thank you for your comments. Siegfried, you are right on the money. I was wondering why it started to work all of the sudden. The reason was quite simply that I had installed pbuilder in the meantime which pulled in debootstrap.
