Aaron, can you get the motherboard maker/model and possibly revision?
You may be able to use 'dmidecode' for that.

Also, does the system's BIOS offer the option to configure the Marvell
controller for AHCI and if so, does the same thing happen with AHCI
enabled?

I found this quote:

"As far as the Marvell Controller goes. I've only had weird issues with
my DVD-ROM that is attached to the single IDE port on the board. As said
before, if it's in AHCI mode, then it detects and works under the latest
Debian or Ubuntu (sorry, haven't tested Fedora on my desktop system in a
while, though I think F10 Beta was the last I installed, and it worked
great.)"

I think the implication of that remark is that even in AHCI mode there
can be problems with DVD devices, but it'd be good to know for sure.
