Advanced Systems Format (formerly Advanced Streaming Format, Active Streaming Format) is Microsoft's proprietary digital audio/digital video container format, especially meant for streaming media. ASF is part of the Windows Media framework. Source : Wikipedia Due to the above I find it *extremely* if not impossible for this to ever be included in a default Ubuntu install. As such I will close this bug report and invite you to submit this as an idea to implement in Brainstorm at http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com where the community can vote on this. This is probably the best way to see if this can be implemented perhaps as an open source solution of some kind. The website I mentioned as example needs a media player plugin that can play .asf files. I installed the mplayer firefox plugin (one of the suggestions of firefox). I do understand that the way it is now means more flexibility, but having a media player browser plugin installed by default means that you have a fully usable system earlier.
